Fortune Bay Explorer is offered throughout
the summer and begins every Monday at 9:00am and ends on Friday when we get
back to the wharf at Harbour Mille.
We also offer the Weekend Explorer a shorter weekend adventure at the Coastal Safari Camp which runs from Saturday morning at 9:00a.m. to Monday morning at 8:30a.m. every weekend throughout the summer.
Travel to the camp is by 23' locally built The 12'x14' canvas guest tents are on wooden platforms with two comfortable beds in each tent. We provide linen and towels. Each tent has a 12 volt electric light powered by battery. We also have a gas heated shower and you can have a shower anytime. In order to minimize the intrusiveness of our camp in this wilderness area we do not use a generator. As a result it is very common to observe caribou, seals, eagles and other birds and animals near the camp. We travel 12 miles across the bay to Long Harbour Fjord the sheltered 12 mile inlet where our camp is located. En route to the camp we pass abandoned fishing communities and keep a lookout for whales, porpoises, dolphins, sunfish and bald eagles. After settling in guests can enjoy lunch before deciding on an itinerary for the day. Many of our guests hike up a trail behind the camp that goes to the top of the surrounding hills from where you can enjoy a panoramic vista out to sea and far inland. We share our trail with the many caribou that inhabit the area.
Some guests take a kayak and go for a paddle while others might prefer to stay around the camp and simply enjoy solitude and serenity by the sea. Hiking is through a rugged
country with continually changing views of the dramatic South Coast scenery.
Expect to see caribou, moose, eagles and an interesting variety of flowers
and birds. In the abandoned communities the old graveyards provide a dramatic testimonial to the many young men lost at sea in the fishery. In years gone by Fortune Bay was known for the large numbers of widows! There are great hiking trails to explore.
Many of our guests enjoy the chance to go fishing and try their hand at catching supper, others go beachcombing or relax on the beach for the remainder of the day. Every day at the Coastal Safari Camp is a new adventure! Finally on Friday it is time to leave. After breakfast we have a
leisurely tour back to Harbour Mille - perhaps fishing or exploring some
of the other coves and inlets en route. We arrive at the dock in time for
guests to make their way to the next destination of their Newfoundland vacation.
